Glossary -> Places -> Point-of-Use
A WorkCenter can be a big place. A Point-of-Use is a more specific location within the WorkCenter used to specify where the Containers of Parts should actually be delivered. On use of this concept allows the same Part to be available on both sides of a WorkCenter, when the Assembly Line running through it should not be crossed. In that case, we would want to specify whether the Parts are going to the North, South, East or West side of the WorkCenter. Another use of this concept is where a particular WorkCenter has many racks of material that don't just follow a standard organizational system. In that case, we would want to specify exactly which Rack the parts are to be delivered to. (One customer normally has two to five Racks per Point-of-Use and the Containers of Parts are arranged first alphabetically, then by Part Number on the Racks. Normally there is enough slack in each of the Racks in the system to allow for new Parts to be inserted in the right place. They also have a WorkCenter devoted to "extra" Parts that get shipped with their products. It has over 30 Racks of Parts. It was concluded that the only practical way to update it was by reusing available space and adding new Racks when required. PFEP printed a guide for the workers telling them on which Rack they could find a particular Part.
